Essential Oils A-Z

Essential oils sometimes called the hormones of plants. The oils are extremely concentrated this is why they must be mixed with carrier oils as neat they are far too strong and may even be unpleasant in odor. About 1 drop in 10-20ml of carrier oil will give off sufficient aroma. Usually the oils will be blended together but you must take care as some do not mix together well whilst others blend together extremely well.

The Essential oils are split into three different categories:

Top notes – These are uplifting oils, and are mainly used to stimulate the person on an emotional level. The aroma will last about 24 hours

Middle notes – These can be used for physical conditions, and effect most body systems and general metabolism. The aroma lasts two-three days.

Base notes –  Most base notes are sedative and the aroma is still there after one week.
The oils are made from many different parts of the plant, such as leaves, flowers, stems bark or roots. From some plants you can obtain more than one type of oil, like the orange tree produces three types of oil: Orange oil, Neroli oil, and Bergamot oil. Each has its own distinctive aroma and properties.

How To Blend Essential Oils

These oils are extremely concentrated and are dangerous when added to the skin neat and may burn the skin. When undiluted the essential oils are far too strong, and may even be unpleasant in odour. Once mixed with a carrier oil the essential oils will be more easily absorbed into the bloodstream and may start to have a therapeutic affect.  It is important to use a vegetable/plant based carrier oil, as mineral oils are not as easily absorbed into the skin. The oils can be mixed at different dilution rates dependant on individual use.

A few drops in 10-20ml of carrier oil will give off a sufficient aroma. Usually the oils will be blended together but you must take care as some do not mix together well whilst others blend together extremely well
